Cooling Tower Notes For Applications

  1. Install location:

Closed Circuit Cooling Towers requires abundant supply of fresh air to flow through the air inlets. If the cooling tower is located near to the wall or it is put in a sealed space, you have to take actions to make sure the searing, saturated air will not turn around and flow into the air inlets again.

  1. Compatibility of the liquid(gas)

The fluid(gas) to be cooled must be compatible with the coil material. Otherwise it will undermine or corrode the condensing coils. In addition, the coils require high-pressure water cleaning or mechanical cleaning. So the coils must be designed to adapt to this case.

  1. Pipes and valves

The pipe must be designed and installed in accordance with the design standard. All pipes must be supported by piping hangers or other supporting equipment. External stop valve may be required if the system requires to isolate individual units.

  1. Fluid(Gas) capacity control

The performance of majority equipment vary dues to the change of its environment wet bulb temperature. Therefore, fluid(gas) capacity control is required to make up for the temperature deviation of fluid(gas) due to the environment temperature difference.

The easiest way to control capacity is to make sure the periodic running of the fan, this is usually applied in multi-fan system or multi-unit system. It is applicable to the application with low requirement for the outlet water temperature since the periodic running is easy to control and is able to control the temperature. Using double-speed fan is more effective compared to the normal one because there is more gears to control.

Warning: Frequent on-off cooling tower could lead the fan motor to overheat. It is suggest that no more than six times on-off equipment per hour is allowed.

How to prevent the equipment from being freezed (very important)

Freeze-proof of spray water

When the cooling equipment is shut down in freezing weather, the spray water collected in the water tank must be protected for freeze-proof purpose by draining the water to an indoor auxiliary water tank, or by providing supplementary heating equipment like steam heating coils, hot water bundles and electric immersion heaters.

Freeze-proof of condensing coil

The cooling equipment will lose certain quantity of heat in freezing weather even though the both water pump and fan are shut down. The coils could be frozen when the fluid is without heat load. The best way to prevent this happening is to add antifreeze if system allows. If not, the cooling system must be designed to reserve  enough heat within the fluid to make sure the outlet temperature is higher than 7℃.

If the antifreeze is not adapted, vent valve and drain valve must be installed at the inlet and outlet so that you can manually empty the condensing coil.
